SEMI-TONED with Under A-Rest from UW Madison
April 14 at 7 pm
From Exeter, England 2016 Winner of the BBC’s THE CHOIR: Gareth’s Best of Britain
Semi-Toned is the University of Exeter’s all male a cappella sensation, having won national and international awards for their stunning performances and music videos, as well as appearances on national television, are returning to the USA for their biggest and best tour yet, Season Three. Since its inception, Semi-Toned has quickly become one of the leading forces in UK a cappella: in 2015 they were crowned champions of the Voice Festival UK, and they are still the only a cappella group ever to win a Broadway Baby Bobby Award. Beyond the UK, Semi-Toned are ready to embark on their fifth consecutive tour, this time across the USA, having been hailed an “international success”. These young men perform a variety of hits from the 70s through to the present day combining their tight harmonies with slick choreography and trademark humor.
Semi-Toned was formed in 2010 at the University of Exeter as a five-man barbershop harmony group. Now, in 2018, the group is twelve men strong and at the forefront of a cappella in the United Kingdom. In April 2015, the group earned the title of national a cappella champions, after winning the Voice Festival UK, but they have become best known for their recent TV appearances. The first of these was on BBC2’s 2016 show ‘The Choir: Gareth’s Best in Britain’, which the group went on to win in front of an audience of over 2 million viewers. In 2017, they appeared again as finalists on Sky 1’s ‘Sing: Ultimate A Cappella’.
The group also produce their own music videos, the first of which, Rich Man, has amassed nearly 130,000 views on YouTube, whilst their most recent video, covering Beyoncé’s 7/11, was the most nominated video at this year’s A Capella Video Awards (AVAs). The video went on to win two awards for Best Electronic/Experimental Video and Best All Male Collegiate Video from its six nominated categories.
Semi-Toned also performs annually at the Edinburgh Fringe, and is the only a cappella group ever to have received the prestigious Bobby Award from Broadway Baby. The group is excited to now return to the United States to embark upon their third tour, performing their new show ‘Season Three’ along the East coast from Florida to New York.
Under A-Rest is a coed a cappella group comprised of students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They will be the opening act for Semi-Toned
Under A-Rest or “UAR” is UW-Madison’s newest a cappella group, going into only our fifth year on campus. Contrary to popular belief, UAR members do not need to be music majors in the University, they just have to be students who love arranging, learning, and performing a cappella music for live audiences.
Under A-Rest is also competitive a cappella group! UAR will be performing in the ICCA competition this March for the third year in a row! The ICCA is a competition involving multiple a cappella groups that are judged on their musical skills and their stage presence. To clarify, yes this is the same competition in the movie Pitch Perfect!
